MUSCAT:In what is a positive development, the number of women candidates contesting for the upcoming Majlis Al Shura elections has doubled more than previous years.
According to statistics provided by the Ministry of Interior, there are 43 female candidates contesting for the elections compared to 20 women candidates in the previous election in 2015. “This is a new record and its good to see more women participation this year,” said an official from Ministry of Interior.
In the upcoming polls, 724 male candidates vying for seats in which 32 candidates wave PhDs, 92 with MA degrees, 249 have BA degrees, 74 have higher diplomas, and 321 have general education diplomas.

The Shura Council comprises 85 elected members representing all the Wilayats of the Sultanate. The members of the Council are elected every four years.
