Muscat: Taxi drivers in Oman will have to be extra cautious as they can only pick and drop off passengers from designated areas, according to a new regulation from the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC).

Those taxi drivers defying the rules will face harsh penalties including cancellation of their licences.

In a statement issued on Sunday, MoTC has said that it is an offence for taxis to pick up or drop off passengers at places other than the designated stops.

This shall be punishable by a fine of RO50 for the first offence, RO100 for the second violation and RO 200 for the third time.

“Licence will be revoked if the person is caught for the fourth time,” the statement added. The decision was issued after amending Article 35 of the Law.
