MUSCAT: Omani students who are enrolled in public or private schools and not less than 15 years of age are now permitted to do part-time work based on the jobs listed by the Ministry of Labour.

The decision comes after His Excellency Dr. Mahad Al Bawain, Minister of Labour issued a new legislation to abolish the minimum wage and number of hours specified for part-time workers.

According to the new decision 115/2021, published in the official gazette, states that GED students enrolled in public or private schools, those not less than 15 years of age, and jobs listed by the Ministry of Manpower can seek part-time jobs. The employment can take place only during breaks after semester exams with the approval from parents. The decision also states that the wages and the working hours of the employees will be determined by both parties through a contract.

As per the earlier decision 40/2017, the hourly wage of the worker was set at not less than OMR 3, and the number of working hours was set at not less than four hours per day and should not exceed 25 hours per week. This decision now stands cancelled.

The new decision also states preserves the right of the part-time worker (student ) to obtain the financial allocations prescribed for him/her by the educational institution in addition to his/her income from work.
