MUSCAT: The newly implemented expat work permit fees will have positive impact on the labour market and Sultanate’s economy, the General Federation of Oman Workers (GFOW) said.

Nabhan bin Ahmed Al Batashi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of GFOW said that the decision to increase the work permit fees will create opportunities to replace expat workforce with Omanis. “This decision comes in line with the vision of “Oman 2040” in terms of its link to the Sultanate’s classification within the global competitiveness index and the skills pillar to become among the ten countries and increase the average per capita in GDP. It will also open new horizons for them and develop their skills in new jobs and sectors,” he said.

On June 1, the Ministry implemented the new work permit fees applicable to expats who work in upper and intermediate occupations as well as technical and specialised professions. According to the decision, the new fee structure will cost OMR 2,000 to recruit expats in top positions, OMR 1,000 for mid levels, and OMR 600 for technical and skilled workers. The fees are applicable for new work permits and renewals.
