MUSCAT: With the government increasing the work permit fees for expat workers in the country, the Ministry of Labour said it is fully prepared to listen to the demands of the employers and study their needs.
On June 1, the Ministry implemented the new work permit fees applicable to expats who work in upper and intermediate occupations as well as technical and specialised professions.
According to the decision, the new fee structure will cost OMR 2,000 to recruit expats in top positions, OMR 1,000 for mid levels, and OMR 600 for technical and skilled workers. The fees are applicable for new work permits and renewals.

In a statement issued, the Ministry said the government is willing to study the needs of the private sector companies.
“The Ministry of Labor followed with interest what was circulated on the subject of raising fees for higher, medium and specialized professions. Our specialists are fully prepared to listen to the demands of the employers, study their needs for manpower, and prepare a government-supported replacement plan, so that their operating costs will be lower and more efficient, even with the increase in fees for the aforementioned professions, and it is also ready to provide free consulting services to them regarding this aspect,” Ministry said.
The Ministry also clarified the decision to raise the expat work permit fees, stating that a large number of professions can be filled by Omani citizens who have practical experience in various fields.
As per the list issued by the Ministry, more than 30 professions will attract the maximum fee of OMR 2,000 per work permit, while more than 120 professions will cost OMR 1,000 per work permit, and 622 professions will be charged OMR 600 per work permit.
“The decision coincides with the recent announcement to support wages, training and qualification to Omani citizens,” the statement said.
“On the other hand, the Ministry affirms that the replacement of Omani workers will reduce the operational costs of any institution and will reflect positively on the fees of services provided,” the statement added.
