MUSCAT: Eco-friendly and reusable bags are available in local market in nominal prices, Oman’s Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) said on Sunday.

In an effort to protect the environment, the Sultanate imposed a nationwide ban on single-use plastic bags from January 1. Violators could be fined as much as OMR 2,000, and the penalties are doubled for repeat offenders.

In a statement issued on Sunday, CPA said local markets are selling bags made of paper, cloth and cotton, in addition to bags made of other organic materials.

CPA also said it is monitoring the markets “to ensure that the prices of environmentally friendly bags are not raised.”

According to Environment Authority (EA) eco- friendly bags can be used 100 times “because they are not less than 50 microns thick. Whereas, plastic shopping bags are for single use only and need more than 1000 years to degrade,” EA added.
