MUSCAT : Single-use plastic bags will be banned in the country from January 1, 2021 and the government has no plans to postpone the decision, the Environment Authority has confirmed on Thursday.

In a statement issued, EA denied rumours circulating on social media regarding the postponement of the decision. “There is no truth about postponing the implementation of the decision to ban the use of single-consumption plastic shopping bags No. 23/2020.The Authority calls everyone taking the information from its official source.”

Violators could be fined as much as 2,000, and the penalties are doubled for repeat offenders.

“Oman faces serious environmental challenges related mainly to environmental protection and public health, from the danger of plastic bags, whose effect remains as long-term non-degradable plastic waste, in addition to the difficulty of collecting and recycling them,” EA said in an earlier statement.
