MUSCAT — Oman is expanding pharmaceutical manufacturing through three projects in Sohar aimed at producing antibiotic raw materials and active ingredients, strengthening medicine supply security and increasing non-oil exports, the Oman News Agency reported on Saturday.
The projects in North Al Batinah governorate cover several stages of pharmaceutical production, from advanced pellets to active pharmaceutical ingredients and basic materials used to manufacture antibiotics.
The companies involved are Al Wajer Pharmaceutical Industries, Drug Manufacturing Company (DMC) and Penicillin Integrated Industries (Pen-G), ONA said.

Al Wajer, which began operations in 2018, has developed more than 18 specialised products and exports its entire output to markets across Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, according to the report.
DMC is developing manufacturing capacity to supply regional pharmaceutical factories with essential active ingredients. The project aims to increase the share of production carried out locally and strengthen Oman’s participation in global pharmaceutical supply chains.
Pen-G plans to produce key raw materials for antibiotics and target major international markets, including the United States, ONA said.
Together, the projects are intended to build a more integrated pharmaceutical manufacturing base, attract investment and bring advanced production technology and expertise to Oman.
They are also expected to create specialised jobs for Omanis in technical fields and expand opportunities for cooperation with international drugmakers in research, development and innovation.
The expansion comes as countries seek to restructure supply chains and secure access to essential medical supplies, the report said. North Al Batinah’s industrial infrastructure and logistics connections are expected to support the sector’s development.
Pharmaceutical manufacturing forms part of Oman’s efforts under its Vision 2040 development plan to diversify the economy, attract healthcare investment and increase manufacturing’s contribution to gross domestic product.
