BEIRUT : Jean-Pierre Lacroix, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, made the remarks at the conclusion of his visit to Lebanon, where he met senior Lebanese officials to discuss the implementation of Resolution 1701, the role of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and options for the period following the mission’s departure.
Lacroix said Lebanese authorities had clearly expressed the importance of maintaining a third-party presence, particularly the United Nations, to help prevent uncontrolled escalation and contain incidents between the Israeli army and the Lebanese Armed Forces.
He also highlighted concerns over the future of the Blue Line and the continued support of local communities in southern Lebanon once UNIFIL completes its withdrawal.
