MUSCAT – Oman laid the foundation stone for a tourism and commercial development on Masirah island on Monday, with an estimated investment of RO 5.775 million, Oman News Agency reported.

The project, being developed by United Real Estate Company, will cover about 60,000 square metres and combine accommodation, shopping, leisure and other services in South Al Sharqiyah governorate.

Plans include a 20-room lodge, more than 40 villas and chalets, a traditional market and a multipurpose hall, alongside pedestrian walkways, gardens and green spaces.

South Al Sharqiyah Governor Yahya bin Badr Al Maawali presided over the foundation stone ceremony.

The development forms part of the governorate’s efforts to attract tourism and commercial investment and broaden its range of visitor destinations, the agency said.

It is also expected to support the local economy by creating marketing opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises and home-based businesses, while drawing on Masirah’s natural, cultural and heritage attractions.
