MUSCAT: Oman is planning to build a new passenger terminal at Sohar Airport as part of efforts to expand regional air connectivity and strengthen the airport’s role in the country’s aviation network, Transport, Communications and Information Technology Minister Eng. Said bin Hamoud Al Maawali has said.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Al Maawali said the plan would see Sohar Airport begin operating more regional services.
He said new routes from Sohar are expected to be announced before the end of the year, with potential destinations including Dammam in Saudi Arabia, Gwadar in Pakistan and southern Iran.

The planned terminal and additional routes are expected to broaden travel options from northern Oman and reduce reliance on Muscat for some regional journeys.
Al Maawali also addressed delays to the Thumrait-Salalah road project, saying the scheme had initially been offered as an investment opportunity.
However, conditions contained in bids submitted by investors prompted the government to change its approach and proceed with the project under the conventional tendering model, he said.
The minister said the earlier investment structure and subsequent change in procurement approach had contributed to the delay in moving ahead with the Thumrait-Salalah road project.
