NEW DELHI: India on Sunday condemned an attack on the commercial vessel MT El Gaia off the coast of Oman, saying 13 of the 14 Indian crew members on board had been rescued while a search was continuing for one missing Indian national.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the Indian Embassy in Oman was closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with Omani authorities involved in the ongoing search and rescue operation.

“We condemn the attack on the commercial vessel MT El Gaia off the coast of Oman earlier today,” the ministry said in a statement dated September 13.

The ministry thanked Omani authorities for their support in rescuing the Indian nationals and said efforts were continuing to locate the missing crew member.

India also renewed its call for an immediate de-escalation of regional tensions and urged parties to pursue dialogue and diplomacy to restore peace.

The foreign ministry said the targeting of commercial shipping, seafarers, civilians and civilian infrastructure in the region was “unacceptable”.

New Delhi also called for the earliest possible restoration of free and safe navigation and the flow of commerce through international waterways in the region.
