DUBAI : The initiative was discussed during a meeting held on August 4 at the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Central Office in the Philippines, where officials met with representatives from the GCC Secretariat, the Gulf Health Council and GCC member state embassies to review the implementation of the Wafid Programme.
The Wafid Programme is a digital platform that oversees mandatory pre-employment medical examinations for workers travelling to GCC countries. It ensures that health screenings are conducted only at accredited medical facilities that comply with unified standards set by Gulf authorities.
During the meeting, the GCC delegation outlined the programme’s accreditation process for healthcare facilities, its quality assurance mechanisms and its implementation across 21 countries, including the Philippines.

In addition to the Philippines, the Wafid Programme operates in Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Ethiopia, Ghana, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Mali, Morocco, Nepal, Niger, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey and Uganda.
At present, the Philippines has 24 Wafid-accredited medical centres and clinics authorised to conduct the required examinations. The Gulf Health Council announced plans to expand the number of accredited facilities, making it easier for Filipino workers to complete mandatory medical screening before taking up employment in GCC countries.
