NEW DELHI : In a letter dated July 22, 2026, addressed to Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh, Sonam Wangchuk expressed gratitude for their visit to him in hospital and their appeal to end his fast, while outlining the conditions under which he would call off his protest.

Wangchuk said the ministers had assured him that the government would positively consider providing adequate compensation to the families of students who allegedly died by suicide following the examination paper leak. He also said the government had agreed to facilitate a meaningful discussion in Parliament to ensure accountability, including consideration of the resignation of the Union Education Minister.

Referring to the ‘Chalo Sansad’ march held on July 20, Wangchuk described the protest as peaceful despite what he called the disproportionate use of police force. He said the demonstration reflected the commitment of young people to democratic values and appealed for participants not to face legal cases, harassment or retaliatory action.

The activist noted that nearly 65 Members of Parliament from across political parties had written to him urging him to end his fast and continue serving the nation. While stating that he wished to return to his students and educational work, he said he could not do so at the expense of the young people whose concerns had sparked the movement.

Wangchuk has requested an unequivocal assurance from the government that no young protester will face punitive or retaliatory legal action for participating in the campaign, stating that their only “offence” was raising their voice for a fair and accountable education system.

He said that if such an assurance is provided, he would end his fast in the belief that the government had responded to the aspirations of millions of young Indians. However, he warned that in the absence of such a commitment, he would be compelled to continue his fast indefinitely. He also appealed for restraint in policing future demonstrations.

Concluding his letter, Wangchuk said the strength of a democracy lies in how it treats its young citizens when they speak with courage, hope and conviction, urging the government to safeguard their democratic rights while addressing the issues raised by the movement.
