MUSCAT: The Public Prosecution cautioned the public against photographing, recording, storing or sharing images, videos and personal information of others without regard for the law, stressing that such actions can result in criminal prosecution under the country’s Cybercrime Law.

In a public awareness message, the Public Prosecution said publishing or circulating news, digital photographs, audio or video clips, comments, data or information – even if they are true and authentic – with the intention of harming another person is a criminal offence.

The prosecution also cautioned that taking photos or videos of other people, transferring, disclosing, copying or retaining them without lawful justification could expose individuals to legal consequences. It stressed that what may appear to be a harmless photograph, video clip or social media post can have serious and lasting repercussions.

“Responsibility begins before you press ‘Share’,” the Public Prosecution said, urging social media users to think carefully before posting content that could violate another person’s privacy or reputation.

Under Article 36(2) and (3) of the Law on Combatting Cybercrimes, promulgated by Royal Decree No. 61/2026, offenders may face imprisonment for up to three years, a fine of up to RO 5,000, or either of the two penalties.
