MUSCAT : The 15-year contract, valued at approximately RO 900 million, covers the operation and maintenance of water and sewage services in Muscat Governorate and the North and South Sharqiyah governorates. It also includes an integrated programme to reduce non-revenue water losses across networks under a performance-based operational model.

The project will serve more than 2.3 million people, representing around 43 percent of Oman’s population, and is designed to improve service delivery, asset management and resource efficiency.
The contract has been awarded in partnership with France’s Suez Group, the Oman Infrastructure Fund (Rakiza), and their partners, including the National Trading Company and the National Energy Center.

Under the agreement, Nama Water Services will retain its role in supervision, governance and performance monitoring, while the operator consortium will manage day-to-day operations based on key performance indicators.

According to Nama Water Services, the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to modernise the sector through digital transformation, smart infrastructure and predictive maintenance systems aimed at reducing water losses, improving network reliability and enhancing operational efficiency.

The scope of the contract includes the operation of 240 wells, management of a 10,700-kilometre water network, distribution of around 470,000 cubic metres of drinking water daily, and the development and rehabilitation of four desalination plants. It also covers more than 400,000 smart water meters.

On the sanitation side, it includes the operation of 22 wastewater treatment plants with a combined capacity of 280,000 cubic metres per day, a 3,000-kilometre sewage network, and 400 kilometres of treated water reuse pipelines.

The CEO of Nama Water Services, Qais bin Saud Al Zakwani, said the project represents a major step in redefining water sector operations through global best practices, innovation and sustainability, while supporting Oman Vision 2040 objectives.

He added that the contract is based on 33 key performance indicators and aims to reduce water losses from 34 percent to 11 percent by 2040, while strengthening preventive maintenance systems and expanding the use of digital monitoring and smart leak detection technologies.

The company also noted that the project includes a national capacity-building programme with an Omanisation rate exceeding 83 percent, alongside initiatives to enhance local content and knowledge transfer, reinforcing long-term sector resilience and sustainability.
