MUSCAT – Oman has coordinated with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to establish a temporary maritime corridor for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, state news agency ONA reported on Tuesday, in a move aimed at safeguarding navigation through one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
According to the report, ships seeking to use the temporary corridor must coordinate with the IMO and follow navigation coordinates issued jointly by the organisation and Omani authorities.
The measure is intended to ensure the continued flow of maritime traffic through the strait in accordance with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which guarantees freedom of navigation and prohibits the imposition of transit fees on vessels passing through international waterways.
