Muharram moon sighted in Oman

1 Muharram 1448 AH falls on June 16, while the official public holiday for the Islamic New Year will be observed on June 18.

MUSCAT : Oman has officially announced the sighting of the crescent moon marking the beginning of the month of Muharram for the year 1448 AH, confirming that Tuesday, June 16, 2026, will be the first day of the Islamic New Year.

According to an announcement issued by the relevant moon-sighting committee and shared by the Oman News Agency (ONA), the crescent moon of Muharram was successfully sighted on Monday evening, making Tuesday the first day of the new Hijri year.

Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam and marks the start of the Islamic lunar calendar observed by Muslims around the world.

Meanwhile, Oman has designated Thursday, June 18, 2026, as the official public holiday for the occasion, allowing employees across the public and private sectors to observe the Islamic New Year.
