MUSCAT : The Permanent Mission of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations and international organizations in Geneva participated in organising the official launch of a report by the International Labour Organization (ILO), prepared in partnership with Oman’s Social Protection Fund, titled ‘Re-envisioning Social Protection in the Sultanate of Oman’.

The report was unveiled during a high-level event held at the Maison de la Paix in Geneva under the patronage of His Excellency Professor Dr. Mahad bin Said Ba’awin, Minister of Labour, and Gilbert Houngbo, Director-General of the International Labour Organization. The event was attended by ministers, ambassadors, senior government officials, representatives of international organizations, experts, academics, and diplomats.

The launch marks international recognition of Oman’s pioneering efforts to redesign its social protection system through an integrated approach that combines social protection, social insurance, financial sustainability, and economic development in line with international standards and best practices.

The report highlights key milestones achieved by the Sultanate, including the consolidation of 11 pension funds into a single unified fund and the expansion of social protection coverage to support citizens across all stages of life.

Participants praised Oman’s experience as a leading model for developing modern and sustainable social protection systems. They noted that the reforms have strengthened the efficiency and inclusiveness of the country’s social protection framework while ensuring long-term financial sustainability.

Speaking at the event, ILO Director-General Gilbert Houngbo commended Oman’s achievements in the sector and emphasized the significance of the report in documenting a pioneering reform experience that can serve as a reference for countries across the region and beyond.
