MUSCAT : The operations were performed on two patients with severe spinal injuries requiring immediate surgical intervention. The successful procedures enabled both patients to receive advanced treatment closer to their location, reflecting the growing capacity of regional hospitals to provide specialised care.

The first patient sustained a serious and unstable fracture of the second lumbar vertebra following a fall.

Surgeons performed spinal stabilisation and fusion using advanced techniques, helping to stabilise the patient’s condition and significantly improve mobility.

The second case involved an expatriate who suffered a severe cervical spine injury resulting in unstable vertebral fractures that posed a direct threat to the spinal cord and surrounding nerves. The medical team carried out a delicate procedure to stabilise the vertebrae and relieve pressure on the nerves, with the operation completed successfully.

The surgeries were undertaken by a team of spine specialists from Khoula Hospital in collaboration with medical staff at Al Rustaq Hospital, highlighting the close coordination between healthcare institutions in delivering advanced treatment across the Sultanate.

Dr. Abdulrahman bin Ali Al Subhi, Consultant Orthopaedic and Spine Surgeon at Khoula Hospital, said prompt diagnosis and surgical intervention were critical in both cases to prevent potentially serious neurological complications.

He noted that the procedures were performed using the latest techniques in spinal surgery and reflected the readiness and expertise of Oman’s national medical workforce.

Dr. Al Subhi added that transferring specialist expertise to referral hospitals in the governorates helps accelerate treatment, improve patient outcomes and reduce the need for transfers to larger tertiary facilities.

Both patients remain under medical supervision and rehabilitation programmes and have shown positive signs of recovery following surgery, he said.

Health officials said the rapid response and direct coordination between the two hospitals enabled immediate treatment and timely surgical care, improving recovery prospects and reducing the risk of complications.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by Khoula Hospital to support healthcare decentralisation, expand access to specialised medical services and enhance the quality of care available to citizens and residents across Oman’s governorates.
