MUSCAT : The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Harib bin Thuwaini Al Said, Advisor at the Diwan of Royal Court.

This year’s Oman Sustainability Week is held under the theme ‘Sustainability in Action: Innovation, Investment, Impact’, underscoring the importance of translating sustainability goals into measurable outcomes through innovation, collaboration, and strategic investment.

Meanwhile, the OPES is being held under the slogan ‘Success through Cooperation: Achieving a Sustainable Energy Future’, underscoring the role of partnerships and technological advancement in shaping the future of the energy sector.

Speaking at the opening, His Excellency Eng. Salem bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, said Oman continues to strengthen its sustainability agenda through strategic projects that support energy transition while maintaining economic growth and environmental balance.

He noted that renewable energy accounted for around 9 percent of total electricity production last year, alongside the launch of the ‘Manah 1’ and ‘Manah 2’ solar projects with a combined capacity of up to one gigawatt.

His Excellency also highlighted Oman’s progress in implementing its National Energy Transition Plan, the National Net Zero strategy, and the regulatory framework for carbon markets, in addition to expanding electric mobility, waste management initiatives, and green infrastructure development.

He said Oman remains committed to achieving zero routine flaring by 2030, noting a 50 percent reduction so far, alongside efforts to integrate renewable energy, water management, and environmental projects within oil and gas concession areas.

A key highlight of the opening ceremony was the launch of the Development Foundation for Social Responsibility in the Energy Sector, which aims to unify and enhance social responsibility initiatives across the energy and minerals sector.

His Excellency Mohsen bin Hamad Al Hadrami, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Foundation, said the launch represents a major milestone in institutionalising social responsibility in the sector, shifting from traditional support initiatives toward sustainable development impact aligned with Oman Vision 2040.

He said the initiative, first launched in 2018 through collaboration among eight oil and gas companies, has so far implemented 11 projects across health, education, youth empowerment, and infrastructure, with investments exceeding RO 15.5 million.
