Manila: Philippine authorities confirmed that the eruption has impacted around 52 villages in Albay province, located approximately 330 kilometers southeast of Manila. According to reports cited by the Philippine News Agency, volcanic activity intensified over the past few days, with lava already flowing down the slopes of the volcano since last Saturday.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has raised concerns over escalating risks, warning residents about potential rockfalls, landslides, and continued lava flows. Authorities also cautioned that volcanic fountains and moderate-strength explosions could occur as the eruption evolves.
Mayon Volcano has a long history of destructive eruptions. The most catastrophic event dates back to 1814, when an eruption killed more than 1,200 people and buried an entire town under ash. Another deadly eruption in 1993 claimed 79 lives, underscoring the persistent threat posed by the volcano.
