TEHRAN : Speaking on the evolving regional dynamics, Khamenei said the Strait of Hormuz has historically attracted foreign powers, referring to past events such as the expulsion of Portuguese forces in 1622. He described the waterway as a symbol of long-standing geopolitical contestation.
The Iranian leader’s remarks come in the wake of the US-Israel war on Iran that began in late February, a conflict that has further escalated tensions across the Middle East. Khamenei stated that Iranians have witnessed what he called “steadfastness, vigilance, and courageous struggle” by Iranian forces during the confrontation.
Reiterating Tehran’s stance, he argued that the presence of US forces in the region has been a key driver of insecurity. According to Khamenei, American military bases and deployments in Gulf countries have contributed significantly to regional tensions, particularly in the context of recent military exchanges involving Iran.

He further claimed that the future of the Persian Gulf region would be shaped by local nations, envisioning a scenario where external influence, particularly from the United States, diminishes. Khamenei added that such a shift would allow the region to focus on “progress, comfort, and prosperity” for its people.
