MUSCAT – The centre has called on vessel operators to strengthen cybersecurity practices, warning that increased reliance on electronic navigation systems has heightened exposure to technical risks and potential cyber threats.

In the advisory, the centre highlighted the importance of safeguarding onboard systems to ensure the safety of ships and boats. It urged operators not to connect unauthorised devices to vessel systems and to regularly update software in line with manufacturers’ instructions. Activating security measures such as firewalls and antivirus programmes was also underscored as essential.

The centre further cautioned against opening links or files from unknown sources on devices connected to navigation systems. It advised mariners to use only reliable and secure internet connections and to disconnect navigation systems from public or unsecured networks while at sea.
