MUSCAT : Dr Alyaqdhan Al Ghafri, Director of Al Nahda Hospital and Consultant in eyelid, tear duct and orbital surgery, said three successful operations have been completed so far, with additional patients scheduled in the coming months.

The procedure is used to treat thyroid eye disease, a condition that can cause eye bulging and increased pressure inside the eye socket. It involves expanding the orbital space by removing selected portions of bone or fat surrounding the eye, thereby relieving pressure on the optic nerve and improving both eye function and appearance.

Dr Al Ghafri noted that the surgery helps prevent serious complications such as optic nerve damage and vision loss, while also alleviating symptoms including dry eyes and difficulty closing the eyelids, significantly improving patients’ quality of life.

He added that the localisation of these procedures comes as part of efforts by the Ministry of Health, represented by the Directorate General of Khoula Hospital, to strengthen specialised healthcare services and reduce the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.

The hospital said it will continue to invest in advanced medical technologies and national expertise, aiming to deliver high-quality, specialised care in line with international standards and enhance confidence in Oman’s healthcare system.

The milestone reflects ongoing efforts to develop specialised medical services and position Oman’s health institutions as leading centres for advanced treatment in the region.
