Colombo: Stand-in captain Lorcan Tucker led from the front with a sensational unbeaten 94 off 51 balls, steering Ireland to a tournament-high 235/5 before Oman’s chase unravelled under pressure.

With both teams entering the contest winless after two heavy defeats, the stakes could not have been higher. A loss would mean elimination, while victory offered a slim mathematical chance of progression behind table leaders Sri Lanka, Australia, and surprise contenders Zimbabwe. Ireland, already dealt a blow with captain Paul Stirling ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to injury, found an unlikely hero in Tucker, who stepped up in emphatic fashion.

After Oman captain Jatinder Singh won the toss and elected to field, the decision appeared justified early on. Left-arm spinner Shakeel Ahmed tore through the Irish top order, removing Tim Tector with a skiddy delivery, forcing Ross Adair into a miscue, and bowling Harry Tector to leave Ireland reeling at 64/4 in 7.3 overs.

Tucker and Gareth Delany first consolidated before unleashing a relentless assault. The pair stitched together a 101-run partnership that shifted the momentum entirely. Delany hammered 56 off 30 balls, striking three fours and four sixes, while Tucker anchored the innings before accelerating spectacularly.

The final four overs proved devastating for Oman, as Ireland plundered 86 runs. George Dockrell provided the late fireworks with a blistering 35 off just nine deliveries, including three consecutive sixes to end the innings. Ireland finished on 235/5, the highest score of this edition and the second-highest total in T20 World Cup history, having struck 21 fours and 13 sixes.

Facing a daunting target, Oman’s reply faltered early. Captain Jatinder Singh and Ashish Odedara fell inside the third over, putting the side on the back foot immediately. Aamir Kaleem and Hammad Mirza briefly revived hopes with a steady 73-run partnership. Kaleem brought up a composed half-century, hitting five fours and two sixes, and etched his name into the record books in the process.

At 44 years old, Kaleem became the oldest player to score a fifty in T20 World Cup history, surpassing the record set by his teammate MD Nadeem in the previous match against Sri Lanka.

However, his dismissal triggered another collapse. Oman slipped dramatically as wickets tumbled in quick succession, losing their way completely under mounting scoreboard pressure. From a position of relative stability, they crumbled, unable to sustain the required momentum.

Ireland tightened their grip with disciplined bowling and sharp fielding, dominating the final 30 overs of the contest and ensuring there would be no late comeback.

With this emphatic win, Ireland remain alive in the tournament, keeping their qualification hopes flickering. For Oman, however, the defeat all but ends their campaign after another disappointing outing.

Ireland win by 96 runs, sending a strong statement that their World Cup fight is far from over.
