MUSCAT : This significant depreciation of the Rupee translates into a major financial boost for the large community of Indian expatriates in the Sultanate, maximising the value of their remittances back home.
The RO 1 = INR 233 rate is reported as one of the highest exchange rate recorded in 2025, allowing expatriates to receive a substantially larger Rupee haul from their Rial earnings.
The rupee’s decline comes amid global pressures, with the currency recently hitting a record low of 89.95 per US dollar, driven by trade imbalances, higher import demand for gold, silver, and other metals, and uncertainty around the US–India trade deal. Portfolio outflows have further weighed on the rupee, prompting the Reserve Bank of India to intervene at times to prevent it from slipping beyond the 90-per-dollar mark.
