MUSCAT – Designated by the United Nations, the day aims to raise global awareness of tsunami risks and highlight the importance of proactive preparation and planning to minimize the impact on lives and property.

The celebration underscores Oman’s commitment to building a society that is aware of natural disaster risks and promoting a culture of prevention and rapid response to safeguard lives and national assets.
The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre of the Civil Aviation Authority continues to enhance the country’s early warning systems by upgrading monitoring and surveillance technologies and strengthening regional and international cooperation for real-time data exchange. These measures ensure timely and accurate warnings in the event of potential hazards.

In coordination with the National Emergency Management Centre and other relevant authorities, the Centre conducts periodic exercises, awareness campaigns, and training programs to boost community readiness and national capabilities in dealing with natural hazards.

Since last year, field campaigns have been launched in coastal governorates including North Al Batinah, Dhofar, and South Al Sharqiyah, educating communities about climate-related risks and appropriate emergency responses. Activities have included awareness sessions for school students and local residents, as well as school evacuation drills.

Evacuation exercises were also conducted in several coastal areas, with the participation of the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority, the National Emergency Management Centre, the Ministry of Information, and the Ministry of Education, aiming to instil a culture of rapid, safe response among students, teachers, and the wider community.

The Civil Aviation Authority reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to strengthening Oman’s early warning and disaster management capabilities, supporting international initiatives for Sustainable Development Goals, and reducing disaster risks, reflecting the Sultanate’s focus on preparedness and the sustainability of national and regional emergency management systems.
