GENEVA : The appeal came during his address at the 151st IPU General Assembly in Geneva, focused on upholding humanitarian standards in times of crisis.
Speaking before the international assembly, Al Yamahi proposed forming an IPU-affiliated working group tasked with supporting ceasefire efforts and advancing the Arab plan for Gaza’s reconstruction. The group, he said, would be responsible for submitting periodic reports to the IPU on progress made in these areas.
He emphasized that the Inter-Parliamentary Union must play a “pivotal and effective role” in addressing the humanitarian and political crisis in Gaza, urging it to “end its prolonged silence” over the past two years. “This initiative,” he noted, “will restore the Union’s natural role as a platform that reflects the conscience of nations and stands with justice and humanity everywhere.”

Al Yamahi underlined that the discussion comes at a critical juncture as the world faces escalating conflicts and humanitarian crises, testing the very principles of international humanitarian law. He warned that the laws designed to protect civilians in conflict zones have faced “violent shocks” in recent years due to widespread violations and lack of accountability.
Highlighting the ongoing suffering in Gaza, Al Yamahi said that more than two million Palestinians continue to endure dire humanitarian conditions requiring urgent and sustained international assistance. He appealed to the global community to ensure the delivery of essential aid and to coordinate reconstruction efforts systematically.
The Arab Parliament Speaker also urged all countries that had suspended funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to immediately resume support, stressing that the agency remains “a fundamental pillar” in providing humanitarian, educational, and health services to Palestinians.
In closing, Al Yamahi called on all nations, international organizations, and financial institutions to back the Arab plan for Gaza’s reconstruction, a comprehensive framework aimed at rebuilding war-torn infrastructure and restoring a dignified standard of living for the Palestinian people.
