MUSCAT : Once completed, the project is expected to become a prominent architectural and tourism landmark in the capital, Muscat.
The square, which won first place in the inaugural Belarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design in 2022, was designed by Ahmed Al Jahdhami, Umaima Al Hanaei, and Abdullah Al Bahri. Following the award, Muscat Municipality issued a construction tender in May, initiating the implementation phase of the project.
According to earlier reports, the Muttrah Square design features a striking pedestrian bridge, shaped like a bird in flight, drawing inspiration from the sword of Imam Al Salt bin Malik Al Kharousi. Positioned above the sea, the bridge is designed to visually frame some of Muttrah’s most iconic sites, while connecting various elements of the project.
The central bridge will be surrounded by a multi-use plaza that includes a dancing water fountain, retail spaces, cafes, and lighting designed to complement the natural rhythm of sea waves. Located directly opposite the Muttrah Fish Market and facing the waterfront, the square aims to enhance the urban fabric of the area while serving as a new public gathering point.
The awarded tender includes a comprehensive range of works, such as site preparation -including earthworks, backfilling, and groundwater extraction; full construction of the architectural pedestrian bridge; development of two wings housing commercial units and other features; installation of the dancing water fountain; completion of rainwater drainage systems and core utility infrastructure; landscaping and public amenities according to approved technical specifications; and use of 4K high-resolution imaging to document project progress.
All works are to be executed in line with detailed architectural and engineering specifications, with the aim of delivering the project to the highest standards.
