MUSCAT – As part of the national anti-drug initiative ‘Hayah’, the reminder points out that individuals who voluntarily seek treatment for addiction – or are reported by close family – will be exempt from criminal prosecution under Article 51 of the Anti-Narcotics Law.
As per this Article, individuals who abuse narcotic or psychotropic substances will not face criminal charges if they proactively approach public authorities to request treatment at an accredited rehabilitation facility. This legal exemption also extends to cases where the approach is made by a spouse or a close relative (up to the second degree).
However, this protection does not apply to individuals who are caught in the act of abuse or those already under criminal investigation or prosecution for related offenses.

Individuals who undergo treatment are also entitled to confidentiality and reintegration support under Article 52, which prohibits the unauthorised disclosure of their treatment history. Violators of this confidentiality clause may face penalties as outlined in the law.
