MUSCAT: The total number of students in schools in Oman have grown by 4.8 per cent for the academic year 2019/2020, making the Sultanate’s education sector one of the fastest growing in the region.
The total number of students enrolled during the 2019-2020 academic year stood at 843,598.
According to the latest data revealed by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), there is also an increase of 6.9 per cent in the number of schools this year. The total number of schools in the country stands at 2,046. “The total number of schools in the Sultanate reached 2,046 for the 2019/2020 academic year, an increase of 6.1 per cent compared to the 2018/2019 academic year. It contained 31,812 classes,” NCSI said.

“71,469 is the total number of teachers in the Sultanate’s schools and 843,598 is the total number of students at an average of 27 students per class,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, due to the coronavirus outbreak in the country, the new school year, will begin only in November. According to Abdullah Al Busaidi, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education, schools in Oman could reopen with 16 students per classroom in order to minimise the spread of Covid-19 among children and staff, while majority of the lessons will be taught online.
