MUSCAT : The Kerala community across Oman is preparing to celebrate Onam, Kerala’s most cherished harvest festival, with vibrant festivities and a strong sense of togetherness. The highlight of the celebrations, Thiruvonam, falls on September 5, coinciding with the long weekend public holiday for the Prophet’s Birthday. This extended break will allow families more time to celebrate, gather, and enjoy the festival in the spirit of unity and joy.
Cultural associations and community groups are hosting programmes that include Thiruvathira dance, music, pookkalams (floral carpets), and children’s competitions, bringing Kerala’s rich traditions to life across Muscat, Sohar, Salalah, and other cities.
Restaurants and catering groups are preparing for record demand for the grand vegetarian Onam Sadhya, served on banana leaves with over 20 dishes such as avial, olan, sambar, pickles, and payasams. Many outlets have already opened pre-bookings to ensure that families can enjoy an authentic festive feast together.
