MUSCAT: Oman Air has announced “leave without pay” programme for some of its pilots, cabin crews and engineering staff, as the airline strives to manage the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, an internal circular said.

According to the circular, the leave without pay will extend for six months for pilots, cabin crews, engineering and maintenance division’s technical staff effective from September 1.

“Airlines around the world, including Oman Air, are implementing cost-cutting measures to ensure that they survive and are able to avoid further staff redundancies,” the circular said.

“This programme, similar to those introduced by airlines around the world, is in no way a reflection on your job performance, the circular stated.

Early in March, Emirates took similar measures asking pilots and cabin crew to take unpaid leave. Last month, International Air Transport Association (IATA) predicted job losses in the Middle East’s aviation and related sector could hit 1.5 million due to the coronavirus outbreak. oman promotions
