MUSCAT : To keep pace with the evolving market trends, the Majlis Al Shura’s Youth Advisory Committee has proposed to amend the current Oman Labour Law.
In a meeting held under His Excellency Younis bin Ali Al Mandhari, Chairman of the Committee, discussed about developing a draft of the new law.
According to the committee the current law needs to keep in pace with the major shifts in the labour market. “After the existing Labour Law was issued in 2003, the market experienced major shifts, which led to individual and groups of workers facing problems with their employers, with the law unable to keep pace with the current labour situation,” the statement from the committee said.

“The law has some legal loopholes in it that led to several problems in the labour market, such as the emergence of the phenomenon of layoffs and unfair dismissal of workers in the private sector, as well as harm to their labour rights,” the committee pointed out.
It was also realised that the current law does not provide full protection and job security for workers in the private sector, and it does not provide an attractive environment for work in the private sector, especially in light of the increasing number of job seekers.
