KOZHIKODE : The accused, N S Surya of Pathanamthitta, was taken into custody by Karipur Police shortly after she landed on an Air India Express flight from Oman. Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Inspector A Abbas Ali had set up surveillance at the airport and intercepted her just as she cleared customs.

Three men — Ali Akbar (32), C P Shafeer (30), and M Muhammad Rafi (30) — who came to receive Surya were also arrested. All three are residents of Malappuram district. The total street value of the seized MDMA is estimated at around ₹1 crore.

Police discovered the narcotics hidden inside toffee packets during a baggage check. Upon interrogation, Surya claimed ignorance of the contents in the packets, but investigators believe she was fully aware and had been recruited as a drug mule.

Surya had reportedly flown to Muscat on July 16 and returned within days, raising further suspicion. According to DYSP P K Santosh, police have also identified the person who dispatched the drugs and a detailed investigation is ongoing.

Authorities say this case is a reminder of the evolving tactics used in drug trafficking and the growing use of women couriers — with this seizure being the largest MDMA haul involving a female at the Kozhikode Airport to date.
