MUSCAT – Brigadier Engineer Ali bin Salim Al Falahi, Director General of Traffic, stated that the ROP is developing a comprehensive smart monitoring system that leverages artificial intelligence and data analytics to identify high-risk behaviour and recurring accident patterns.
This initiative aligns with global standards in road safety and aims to reduce accident rates by influencing driver conduct.

Brigadier Al Falahi highlighted the most common traffic violations, which also include speeding and running red lights. He explained that the ROP employs a traffic points system for repeat offenders. Points are accumulated for each violation, leading to progressive legal actions such as temporary license revocation, mandatory driving qualification courses, administrative vehicle impoundment, and ultimately, license cancellation.

While technical systems, particularly 24/7 automated cameras, have proven highly effective in accurately and consistently recording violations without human intervention, Brigadier Al Falahi emphasized the continued importance of human monitoring. These automated systems are invaluable for providing reliable data with images, locations, and timestamps. However, human presence remains crucial for areas not covered electronically and for managing unforeseen traffic situations.

Looking ahead, the Royal Oman Police is actively pursuing new technology projects to further refine traffic control and enhance road safety. This includes developing smart systems inspired by successful models in advanced countries. The ROP is also collaborating with relevant authorities to continuously update its technical infrastructure and improve monitoring tools, ensuring alignment with global road safety and security benchmarks.
