Muscat: The intricate procedure was carried out by the Hand and Microsurgery Department at Khoula Hospital, led by Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Wahaibi, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon and Head of the department. The surgery marked a significant milestone in the field of reconstructive microsurgery in Oman.

Dr. Al Wahaibi highlighted that the operation’s success hinged on two critical elements — the immediate first aid provided at the accident site and the proper preservation of the severed hand and fingers. These steps, carried out in accordance with international medical protocols, allowed tissue viability to be maintained until the patient was transferred to the Advanced Hand Surgery and Replantation Center at Khoula Hospital.

The procedure included bone stabilization, delicate sorting of affected microvascular structures, and removal of damaged tissue. Surgeons meticulously reconnected microvessels, ligaments, and arteries to ensure proper blood flow and functionality in the replanted limbs.

Following the surgery, the patient was reported to be in a stable condition, with no complications, infections, or clots — and showing promising signs of sensory and motor recovery. The patient was discharged from the hospital shortly afterward.

Dr. Al Wahaibi also used the opportunity to emphasize workplace safety. He urged the public to follow safety protocols, wear protective equipment such as gloves, and ensure machinery is turned off during maintenance. He stressed that quick and correct response to severe injuries — including the preservation of amputated parts — plays a vital role in successful treatment outcomes.

Dr. Al Wahaibi said, calling it a major step forward for healthcare services offered to both citizens and residents in the Sultanate.
