MALDIVES: The agreement, initiated by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was signed on May 7 in the Maldives during the Saudi-Maldives International Forum for Integrity Promotion. The Sultanate’s delegation was led by His Excellency Sheikh Ghassan bin Hilal Al Alawi, Chairman of the State Audit Institution.
Endorsed by Resolution No. (9/48 QT) during the 48th session of the OIC’s Council of Foreign Ministers in Islamabad in March 2022, the Makkah Agreement aims to strengthen cooperation between law enforcement bodies in preventing, investigating, and prosecuting corruption-related crimes. It also prioritizes the tracing and recovery of illicit assets.
The Convention outlines areas of collaboration including exchange of information, technical assistance, joint investigations, and training. It covers a wide range of corruption crimes such as bribery of public and foreign officials, embezzlement, abuse of power, illicit enrichment, and money laundering.
