Muscat: Oman surged ahead in the 2024 Open Data rankings, leaping ten spots from 2022 to secure ninth place out of 197 countries with an impressive score of 84 points—up from 74 two years ago. The report also placed the Sultanate third globally in data openness, acknowledging its robust statistical systems across social, economic, and environmental domains.

The report commended Oman’s achievement of full scores in vital categories such as population statistics, health infrastructure, foreign trade, money and banking, and openness indicators like machine-readable formats and open licensing.

Significant improvements were noted in Omani economic statistics. The coverage score in this sector jumped from 65 in 2022 to 77 in 2024, bolstered by strengthened databases in monetary, banking, foreign trade, and balance of payments—many of which achieved perfect or near-perfect scores. Notably, price index statistics improved dramatically, rising from 50 to 88 points.

The overall economic data score climbed from 76 to 89, with the monetary and banking statistics segment achieving a flawless 100 points. Foreign trade and balance of payments databases registered 100 and 94 points respectively, while labor force statistics scored 90.

Oman’s advancements in social statistics were equally commendable, with the sector’s score increasing to 83, up from 74 in 2022. This was largely driven by full scores in population and health infrastructure databases.

The report recognizes Oman as part of the top 80% of countries showing enhanced open data performance. It also notes that this year’s index recorded the highest global growth rate since its inception—12.5%.
