MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday discussed Iran’s nuclear programme with, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, who is currently visiting Moscow, Reuters reported quoting officials in Kremlin.

Oman has been mediating between Iran and the United States over the last two weeks both in Muscat and Rome on finding a solution towards regional peace and Tehran’s nuclear programme. The third round of talks is expected to be held this weekend in Muscat.

Speaking to Russian news agency Interfax, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov stated that both the leaders discussed the progress of US-Iran talks. “We discussed the progress of negotiations between Iranian and American representatives,” Ushakov said.

“We will see what the result will be. We maintain close contact with our Iranian colleagues. Where we can, we help,” he added.

His Majesty the Sultan is on a two-day state visit to Russia. Putin highlighted that 2025 marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Oman.

“We share a strong history, and our contacts continue to develop. We have prepared for your visit across all sectors,” Putin said.

Putin expressed hope that further steps could be taken in the energy sector, noting that Russian companies have shown strong interest in deepening cooperation with Oman.

“Much more remains to be done in the field of trade and economic cooperation, but we now have an opportunity to expand ties in logistics, transportation, mutual investment, and agriculture,” he added.
