MUSCAT : The Minister disclosed that the number of expatriate workers in the private sector has surpassed 2 million, while the number of Omani employees stands at approximately 265,000.

Addressing the challenges surrounding the employment of Omani citizens, Dr. Ba’awin highlighted that, on average, between 300 to 400 Omani workers face service termination each month. However, he emphasized that this number remains significantly lower than global averages.

The Minister also compared recent figures to previous data, pointing out that 2020 witnessed the highest number of termination requests for Omani workers, while 2024 has seen a marked decline. 2024 has recorded the lowest number of termination requests, he, underscoring the positive trend in national employment retention.

According to the Minister, a total of 231 requests were submitted to the labour negotiations and economic committees for review. Of these, 5,402 requests were made by private sector establishments seeking to terminate the services of Omani workers. However, the committee approved only 87 of these requests, leading to the retention of 4,892 Omani employees.

In an effort to streamline the process and increase transparency, the Minister also mentioned that a digital platform was put in place to monitor termination requests, ensuring greater oversight in the handling of national workers’ job security.
