MUSCAT : The Council confirmed that this requirement is not a national law, but rather a procedure followed by some foreign embassies.

In a statement, the Council clarified that this practice is specific to certain foreign embassies and applies only to their citizens residing in Oman. These embassies require their citizens to obtain their first wife’s consent before documenting a polygamous marriage contract at notary public departments in the Sultanate.

The clarification reads as follows: “The Supreme Judicial Council has followed with interest what is being circulated on social media platforms regarding the requirement that the husband obtain the first wife’s approval to marry another woman. The Council confirms that this procedure only concerns some foreign embassies that require their citizens residing in the Sultanate of Oman to obtain the husband’s first wife’s approval to marry another woman when documenting the marriage contract at the notary public departments in the Sultanate of Oman.”
