MUSCAT : According to statistical data from the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, November emerged as the peak month, attracting 10,962 visitors—19.5 percent of the total annual visitors. The month of February 2024 came next with 8,436 visitors, followed by January 2024 with 7,839 visitors.

The statistics also highlight the growing popularity of Wakan Village, located in the Wilayat of Nakhal. The village saw 36,759 visitors in 2024, marking an increase of 4.1 percent from the previous year. February stood out as the most active month, with 6,499 visitors, coinciding with the blooming of flowers on the village’s trees.

The growth in tourism is reflected in the increased number of tourist facilities in the governorate. By the end of 2024, there were 162 licensed facilities, including resorts, hotels, guest houses, and green lodges. Guest houses were the most prevalent, accounting for 95 facilities (57.5 percent of the total).
South Al Batinah boasts 495 registered archaeological and historical landmarks, including castles, forts, ancient mosques, and towers. Rustaq Wilayat has the highest concentration of these sites, with 250 landmarks (50.5 percent of the total).

Dr. Al Moatasem bin Nasser Al Hilali, Director of the Department of Heritage and Tourism in South Al Batinah Governorate, highlighted the diversity of historical sites, including pre-Islamic archaeological locations like Afi and Maslamat. He also noted the ongoing restoration efforts, with 47 sites restored to date.

Investment in tourism facilities is also on the rise, with Barka Wilayat leading the way with 123 facilities. The Ministry is actively promoting investment opportunities and encouraging the development of various tourism experiences, including sea trips, diving, paragliding, and adventure tourism in mountain trails and valleys.

The Ministry is also focusing on involving local communities and SMEs in the tourism sector, encouraging them to establish green lodges and guest houses. They are also aiming to promote heritage tourism by encouraging the restoration and use of traditional mud houses as heritage inns.

The Department of Heritage and Tourism is working closely with local authorities and investors to develop the tourism sector further, organizing workshops and events to showcase investment opportunities and promote the region’s rich cultural and natural heritage.
