Oman’s Labour Ministry issues guidelines for workplace safety and health during Ramadan

The Ministry of Labour has released a set of guidelines for both employers and employees to ensure occupational safety and health during the holy month of Ramadan.

MUSCAT : These guidelines outline the responsibilities of employers and provide important instructions for employees to maintain their health and effectively perform their work tasks while avoiding risks and injuries.

Employer Responsibilities:

The Ministry of Labour stresses that employers must provide a safe and healthy work environment that accommodates the needs of employees observing Ramadan. Employers are obligated to:

• Offer flexible work shifts and avoid prolonged hours, particularly during peak fasting times.
• Reduce working hours for jobs that require strenuous activity under the sun.
• Monitor and manage employee fatigue to ensure optimum performance and safety.
• Ensure that first aid and emergency response protocols are readily available.
• Raise awareness among employees about potential workplace hazards and preventative measures.
• Minimize stress within the workplace to support employees’ mental and physical well-being.
• Implement travel management procedures to avoid unnecessary trips that may lead to exhaustion.
• Provide cold water for washing the face and ensure that necessary personal protective equipment is available and used.


Employee Guidelines:

Employees are also urged to take steps to protect their health during Ramadan. The Ministry recommends the following guidelines for workers to maintain their energy and safety:

• Ensure they get sufficient sleep each night to stay well-rested and focused.
• Delay the Suhoor meal and prioritise consuming fibre-rich foods for longer-lasting energy throughout the day.
• Avoid caffeinated and sugary drinks at Iftar to prevent dehydration and energy crashes.
• Drink plenty of water during non-fasting hours to stay hydrated.
• Always use personal protective equipment as required by their job.
• Inform supervisors about any chronic health conditions or medications they are taking to adjust work requirements accordingly.
• Adhere to all occupational health and safety instructions provided by the employer.
