MUSCAT : The project, which cost over RO 38 million, has a storage capacity of approximately 15.7 million cubic metres of water. The dam stands 30 metres tall and stretches over a length of 2,287 metres.

The opening ceremony, held under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Saeed bin Khalfan Al Maamari, Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs, highlighted the importance of the dam in safeguarding the Wilayat of Amerat and surrounding areas.

His Excellency Eng. Ali bin Mohammed Al Abri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources for Water Resources, explained that the Al Jufainah Dam is a critical part of a wider flood protection system for the region. The system includes seven dams within the Wadi Adi watershed and aims to reduce flood risks in Al Amerat, protecting both residential and commercial areas, as well as the neighbouring Al Wattayah and Al Qurm regions.

The dam construction project took three years to complete, preceded by extensive engineering and hydrological feasibility studies, as well as detailed designs created with international expertise. Notably, small and medium enterprises contributed 29 percent to the project’s execution, while 46 citizens were employed, representing an Omanisation rate of 43 percent of the workforce.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has now completed a total of 200 dams across the Sultanate of Oman, including 76 groundwater recharge dams, 117 surface storage dams, and seven flood protection dams.

H.E. Al Abri stressed the significance of water preservation and resource development as central to Oman’s sustainable development goals. The dams, which have been in development since the mid-1980s, are essential for enhancing water availability, mitigating flood risks, and ensuring the safety of both lives and property during extreme weather events.
