MUSCAT : In a recent statement, Dr Khalfan bin Said bin Mubarak Al Shuaili, the Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, underscored the importance of community involvement, explaining that most of the real estate in Ruwi and Muttrah belongs to citizens themselves.

Their participation, he noted, is key to creating a sustainable revival in these areas. “The main party to revive the places is the residents or the community of this region,” the Minister said. “‏The role of the government is major.”

During discussions with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the Minister explored global urban renewal strategies that could be adapted to Oman’s context. Similarly, he confirmed speaking with the Minister of Finance to emphasize the importance of focusing on Ruwi and Muttrah. “The result is satisfactory,” the Minister remarked, hinting at optimism for future developments.

The Minister explained that one of the primary reasons for the population shift is the government’s land distribution policy, which has favoured areas like Al-Amerat, Al-Seeb, and Barka. Many residents from Muttrah have naturally followed these new housing opportunities.

However, the Ministry is already working on urban renewal programs, including a comprehensive study on the “Greater Muttrah” area, to restore old neighbourhoods and encourage residents to return. “There are programs that cannot be announced,” the Minister noted, “but there will be a development.”

According to ministry officials, these initiatives will unfold gradually over the next 20 years. The goal is to address immediate concerns—like updating infrastructure and housing—while laying the groundwork for a modern, thriving Muscat that honours its heritage in Ruwi and Muttrah.
