MUSCAT : Following two days of rich discussions at the Muscat Global Knowledge Dialogue, the International Science Council (ISC) Third General Assembly (GA) 2025 officially begins today, welcoming ISC Member delegates and Fellows from around the world at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC). This event marks a significant milestone as the first in-person General Assembly since the ISC’s establishment in 2018.

Peter Gluckman, ISC President said:
“This General Assembly is an important milestone for the ISC, marking not only our first in-person gathering since 2018 but also a moment to reflect on the immense changes shaping science and society over the past decade. The global scientific community faces increasing challenges—from the erosion of trust in evidence-based policy to the growing influence of disinformation and technological disruption. As the voice of science on the world stage, the ISC must continue to evolve, focus its efforts where it can have the greatest impact, and ensure that scientific knowledge is at the heart of decisions shaping our collective future.”

Taking place on January 29 and 30, the General Assembly offers a dedicated platform for ISC Members to engage in strategic discussions and shape the Council’s future work. Over the two-day event, participants will take part in discussions and deliberations addressing inter alia: the ISC Strategic Plan 2025–2028 and the related budget; new directions in the portfolio of freedom and responsibility in science; a renovated science agenda setting function; future directions in the ISC membership; critical issues related to the futures of science systems; the ISC regional presence and the establishment of new regional antennas; and final modifications in the revised ISC Statutes and Rules of Procedure.

The programme also includes tailored opportunities for discussions and collaboration with the ISC Affiliated Bodies, and regional groups and prospective members. Leading to the General Assembly session, dedicated fora are organized for different membership categories, including prospective members and young academies, providing space to exchange ideas and discuss shared challenges. Regional meetings and side events focusing on Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia and the Pacific aim to foster collective action and enhance regional planning. Additionally, specialized sessions for Early- and Mid-Career Researchers (EMCRs), ISC Fellows, and thematic groups will foster knowledge exchange and networking opportunities.
