Muscat – The plant is the first phase of a waste treatment plant project, which is expected to start operating by mid-2026, with a daily production capacity of up to 10,000 tons of waste.

The integrated plant will process 3.3 million tonnes per year, contributing to enhancing copper recovery with the support of an approved ‘green investment’ of RO 40 million (EUR 100 million) from Austrian precious metals storage company BPG.

The Al Arjaa Tailings Calibration Processing Plant, a joint venture between Austrian company BPG Precious Metals Storage and Oman Mining Company, is a turning point in Green Tech Mining and Services’ journey towards reprocessing mine tailings and producing what is known as ‘green copper’.

The plant relies on advanced technologies, such as induction leaching, to treat tailings and produce a copper-rich solution that is purified and converted into pure copper cathodes – with a purity of up to 99.99 percent – through solvent extraction and electrochemical (SX/EW) techniques.

The plant’s design features environmentally friendly technologies that help reduce fresh water consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, through fluid recycling systems and solar energy utilization.
Eng. Matar bin Salem Al Badi, CEO of Minerals Development Oman Company, said: “The waste treatment plant in Al Arjaa embodies the company’s unwavering commitment to innovation and sustainability in the Omani mining sector, and its pursuit of providing innovative environmental solutions that achieve the company’s economic goals, with a focus on protecting the environment.”

He added in a statement to the Oman News Agency that the project is a pivotal step in reprocessing mining waste, enhancing the circular economy, and rehabilitating the surrounding areas, so as to achieve sustainable development.

Ernest Griesemann, Chairman of Green Tech Mining and Services, also added that the waste treatment plant represents the cornerstone for establishing an integrated waste treatment plant. He noted that the project highlights the strength of international cooperation and the company’s commitment to environmental and social governance principles.

He further explained that the waste treatment plant in Al Arja embodies a practical model for integrating sustainability principles into mining operations, becoming a new standard to be emulated for future projects in the region by converting waste into valuable resources, while restoring the surrounding ecosystem.

Green Tech Mining and Services Company was established in 2018 and focuses on treating mine waste, providing innovative solutions for treating drainage, and converting low-quality ore piles into valuable resources including copper, gold, and silver.
The company relies on modern technologies and circular economy principles to provide sustainable solutions for Oman Mining Company’s mining operations in Al Arja.
