Muscat: Shawarma, the Middle Eastern delicacy, claimed the top spot, while India’s beloved street food, Vada Pav, also made the prestigious list.
The current rankings, frequently revised based on Taste Atlas’ extensive data, crowned Shawarma as the best sandwich in the world. A Middle Eastern favorite, Shawarma features marinated and spit-roasted meat with a history tracing back to the Ottoman Empire. Its name, derived from the Arabic pronunciation of the Turkish word çevirme (meaning “to turn”), refers to the rotating skewer on which the meat is cooked, a defining feature of this iconic dish.
Among the notable entries, India’s Vada Pav has also secured a place, highlighting its growing global recognition. Known as Maharashtra’s pride, this street food snack combines a deep-fried, spiced potato fritter (vada) stuffed inside a soft pav bread bun and is often paired with tangy chutneys. What started as a humble street food has now gained popularity across the country, earning its spot among the world’s best sandwiches.
